In short: There's no official answer to what age to start baby classes. Most babies can join a gentle parent-and-baby class from the first weeks, whenever you feel ready. If your baby was premature or has a health condition, ask your paediatrician first. Then choose a class grouped for your baby's stage, where you join in.

It's 3 a.m., you're mid-feed, scrolling. Someone in your antenatal WhatsApp group has just posted a photo from their baby's first class. Your baby is the same age. Should you have started already?

Take a breath. You haven't missed anything. This guide explains what age to start baby classes, what suits each stage, and how to tell when you and your baby are ready.

Is there a best age to start baby classes?

No. Leading health organisations such as the WHO, the NHS and the American Academy of Pediatrics don't set a starting age for baby classes. The right time is when the class suits your baby's stage and you have the energy to go.

What the research does show is that babies grow through interaction. Harvard University's Center on the Developing Child says "responsive, serve and return interactions with caregivers play an essential role in supporting healthy brain development." That happens at home from day one. A class is simply another place for it to happen, with new things to explore.

Some studies have looked at classes started at specific ages. In one, babies who began active, participatory music classes at 6 months showed better early communication gestures and social behaviour than babies who only listened to music (Gerry, Unrau & Trainor, 2012). That tells us classes where you and your baby take part can help. It doesn't mean 6 months is a deadline.

What baby classes suit each age?

The best class at each age matches what your baby is working on right now. Here's a quick guide from newborn to 18 months.

AgeWhat your baby is doingWhat a good class looks likeWhat you get
0–3 monthsWatching faces, listening, starting tummy timeCalm, slow-paced: songs, gentle touch, textures, tummy timeA reason to leave the house, ideas, other new parents
3–6 monthsReaching, grabbing, rolling, laughingRattles, textures, cause-and-effect play, more tummy timeSimple games to repeat at home
6–12 monthsSitting, crawling, pulling up, babblingRamps, tunnels, gentle swinging and sliding, action songsSpace for your mover to explore safely
12–18 monthsWalking, climbing, copyingClimbing equipment, bubbles, songs with actionsA place to burn energy and practise new skills

Newborn to 3 months

Your baby is taking in faces, voices and touch. A good class at this age is calm and unhurried, with plenty of room for feeds and naps. For many new parents and caregivers, the biggest benefit is theirs: a reason to get dressed, leave the house and talk to another adult.

3 to 6 months

Babies start reaching for toys, rolling and laughing. Classes with textures, rattles and tummy time give them new things to explore. For ideas to try at home at this stage, see our guide to activities for a 6-month-old.

6 to 12 months

Many babies are sitting, then crawling and pulling up. This is when equipment like soft ramps and tunnels comes into its own, because your baby can move to it themselves.

12 to 18 months

New walkers love to climb, balance and copy older children. Classes with climbing equipment and action songs channel that energy, and from around 10 months many families also look at toddler classes.

Signs your baby is ready for a class

Your baby doesn't need to sit, crawl or do anything in particular before a first class. Look for these signs instead:

  • Your baby has some awake, alert stretches during the day.
  • They're interested in faces, voices or sounds.
  • You feel physically ready to get out with your baby.
  • You'd enjoy meeting other parents and caregivers.

It's sensible to wait a little if your baby is unwell, or if you're still recovering from the birth. If your baby was born early or has a medical condition, ask your paediatrician when to start.

"Isn't my baby too young to get anything out of it?"

No. Babies explore the world through their senses from birth, and a class gives them fresh sights, sounds and textures, with you right there. They won't "do" much in the early months, and that's fine. Watching is learning.

Classes help parents too. A 2025 consensus statement in BMJ Open found that "new parents are at increased risk of loneliness," which affects the health of parents and babies. For families far from relatives, a weekly class can be where friendships start.

Do you need to start classes early?

No. Your baby gets most of what they need from everyday play with the people who love them. Starting at 3 months, 9 months or 15 months is all fine, as long as the class fits your baby's stage and your family's week.
